Ben Rose Stirs Up a Media Storm

On Friday, May 29, in spite of the fact that a large crowd had formed and was dancing up and down the block, city bi-law officers came to shut Ben down on the basis of the a new, "no amplification" rule on busking permits this year.

Check out the links below to see Ben (and other local musicians) interviewed about the controversy over amplification rules, which shows no sign of blowing over.

If you support Ben Rose and his music, please read the following articles and feel free to comment, or email Ben with your support!

Cheers,

Chris Austman & Andrea Romolo: Music at the Auburn Saloon

Greeting Lovers of Music,
Monday obviously sucks but does it have to? I'm trying to take back Monday by making it the night I listen to my favorite musicians in a room with no VLTs or big screen TVs. The room is The Auburn Saloon under the Calgary Tower (115 9 Avenue SE) and my first concert is going down this Monday the 18th.
The plan is I'll warm up the room til Chris Austman starts up at 7 followed by Andrea Ramolo at 8 followed by an open stage at 9.

Chris Austman has one of the sweetest tenor voices I've heard along with tasty classical guitar. Andrea Ramolo is a truly sizzling alt/country singer/songwriter who I had the honor to share a stage with in Toronto last year. After you've been wowed stick around and jam.
There's a $5 cover till 8:30.

I'd love to see you there,
Ben

Does Cowtown Need Another Jam?

Hey Music Lovers,
Does Cowtown need another jam? Not if you ask me. I've always felt that jams were the bars of Cowtown's cheap unimaginative attempt to make money off music without paying musicians.
If you agree with me then you'll no doubt wonder why I invite you to my open stage Monday night at the Auburn Saloon.
Let me explain. It starts with my apartment being very crowded with my suddenly mobile baby on the loose and ...anyway it seemed like a good idea to park my speakers at the Auburn Saloon when I'm not using them on the weekend. It started with just wanting to make space but once my head gets spinning... you see I've always wanted to book the music I want to hear into a cool room with art on the walls and no TVs or VLTs and no people who weren't there to hear the music. The Auburn Saloon, on Sundays and Mondays matches all those criteria. Right down to the "no people".
I know what you're thinking. What kind of crappy jam doesn't have any VLTs and TVs?
My jam doesn't have any VLTs or TVs and I guess it goes without saying that no UFC fights will be shown and no jam will be pushed till 11 because the Flames made the playoffs. (Fuck the Flames by the way) Also no pool table.
I want to book other people to host it but first I need to show the management signs of life. There is literally nobody there ...except me and my excellent sound system so if you happen to have friends that like to drink - not necessarily alcoholics but people who like to drink beer more than tea bring them to balance out all the damn tea drinking. Or not. I actually like playing to a completely empty room. All the better to enjoy the sound of my own voice. It starts at 7 and goes till at least 11.

Maybe I'll see you there

Show Me the Love

Hey Music Lovers,
I've got 3 things.

First,
A big "Thank You" to everyone who has helped make my Wednesday night jam at Denim (950 QueenslandDrive SE) a hit. It now features live recording and a booking agent from Jake Carvin Entertainment in attendance on the first and second Wednesday of the month.

Secondly, Ben Rose and the Money will be rocking a joint called Grand Central in Okatoks this Saturday night (The 5th of May). Strangely enough the place really digs original music and you can still smoke but it's well ventilated.
To get there take highway 2a to Okatoks and turn left on Elizabeth.

And coolest of all Thirdly,
On May 10th The Ship and Anchor Songwriting Contest has the chance to immortalize me forever as Calgary's third best songwriter. For those I haven't told already, the last two years I have won Second Runner Up(third), 250$ and two Thursday night passes to the Festival. While it would
be tempting to chase the first prize of a lot more money and a chance to play a side stage at noon, I have made up my mind that I want third. I want the record to show that for three consecutive years in the mid-oughties there was only one man in Calgary trully worthy of the title,

Third Best Songwriter in Calgary
and it was Ben Rose.

The rules clearly state that they are not judging your performance or how
much you work the crowd but rather the song itself. Having observed the
contest for its first three years it seems to me that more often then not
the winner is the act that puts on the best show and has the best crowd
support. So get your asses down and shamelessly out cheer my rivals cheering
teams or you could always defect and cheer for Heather Blush. It all starts
at 7:00 pm Thursday night May 10th at the Ship and Anchor. My birthday is the day before and all I want is for somebody to meet me at the Ship at 5 for good seats.
